Please plan to attend the September General Meeting to place your vote for the new Board
of Plano Art Association. More than ever PAA needs volunteers to step forward and offer
their skills in any way possible.
We have a core group of very enthusiastic, creative people but we do need assistance in
various areas if we are to successfully accomplish our goals for this year. Members
are encouraged to come to the first general meeting on September 24th at 7 pm and learn
more about volunteer opportunities with PAA.
Downtown at Sundown The City of Plano will be hosting Downtown at
Sundown every second Saturday from 5 to 10 PM through November. Last month our
President Glen Ayers participated and he says it was a really terrific event.
Anyone can participate. All you need to do is bring yourself and some of your art
to sell in the historic downtown Plano area. For those of you attending Saturday
Studio, it will let out at the same time Downtown at Sundown starts up and we can
head straight there after Saturday Studio. For those coming just for this event,
we can all meet at the ArtCentre at 5:00 and go across the street to the parking
lot where Downtown at Sundown is being held. We already have a reserved space,
and we should have enough tables to hold everyone's art. If you have a small
portable table that you want to use, please bring it anyway, and easels or stands
to hold your art if you wish. We should also have a canopy to protect us from the
nasty old Texas sun. The person running the event is Jon Hubach and he is the
Downtown Planner for the City of Plano. He will show us to our space. Hope to
see you there!
Introducing Saturday Studio! Pal around with your fellow artists every second Saturday.
The first Saturday Studio went well, with a number of people who shared their art and some of their creative process. We also got some great ideas for future workshops.
The Saturday Studio will be held the second Saturday of the month from 3:00 to 5:00 pm upstairs at the ArtCentre of Plano until November. Bring a favorite piece of your art to show everyone and tell us why and how you do what you do, or you can just listen and chat. Wear your nametag, if you have one. If you don't, make yourself a nice creative nametag. If you still don't have one, we'll have stickers and markers. We look forward to meeting all of you up close and in person.
Plano Art Association Members Share Art with Plano's City Hall
There's nothing drabber than a large, gray room full of cubicles with empty walls all around. That's why PAA has agreed to generously loan art for 6-8 weeks at a time to Plano's City Hall Utility Department. Art created by our members hang on the once bare walls where it is admired & discussed by office workers and visiting patrons/guests. Our art gets exposure and helps educate the public about PAA and the talented people who are its members. No, this isn't technically an "art show." However, admirers have purchased past artwork, so you never know who might be your next buyer. Several members, including myself have loaned art to the City Hall in the past. It has been a pleasant and rewarding experience.
If you are a member of PAA and would like to participate in this project here is what it entails:
1. That your art have wire hangers on the back.
2. That you are willing to part with it for two months.
3. That you can both deliver and pick it up your art from City Hall, which is located ½ block from the
Plano ArtCentre where we have our monthly general meeting.
4. The next time we change out the art is in late October, so we will need volunteer artists then,
as well as for January, March & May.
If you have any questions, or would like to add your name to the list of artists who desire to participate in the future, please email me at annstoryart@sbcglobal.net

Betty Hughston-Watercolor Artist
Betty in her artist statement says her natural inclinations to draw and paint were nurtured through public school and college. Currently her focus is the medium of watercolor.
This is in Betty’s own words:
Artistic expression began in the second grade. By high school, I had formed a strong sense of design, shape, and color, which led to interior design studies at Southern Methodist University and drawing classes with Octavio Medellin.
I paint in a sensitive, lively manner, delighting in still lifes, landscapes, and portraits.
My recent work has taken on a more bold, abstract quality, while retaining the joys of watercolor.
Having participated in numerous local and national juried art shows, my awards of merit include: acceptance into Annual Juried Membership Exhibition of Southwest Watercolor Society, Plano Art Association Juried Membership Show, Richardson Civic Art Society Juried Membership Show, and the Watercolor Art Society-Houston Annual International Juried Show.
Betty also wrote this on 4-23-2007 to be added to her bio.
If a time comes when the “inspiration juices” aren’t flowing well, I recommend you grab a friend take a notebook and go to the nearest venue that features an art show. Or try a dance program, a concert, a sculpture garden. And don’t forget ethnic centered entertainment. You could really go wild at a museum! The variety of subjects is unending.
Write notes about your reactions to these events. Listen to what your brain is telling you, you will be surprised later that you took in so much information. Now you begin your composition. Who says you can’t paint an enormous cloud over a tiny house and tractor on a low horizon? Who says you can’t tilt your foreground any way you like it? Who says the head on your Indian can’t be a pumpkin with feathers?
Art is fun. Don’t take it too seriously. Listen to your heart and head.
Serious will come later.
Betty H.
Note – Betty has recently moved to California. She will be missed!

Second place, Bob Lanett
