Featuring our youngest member: DILAN WALPOLA

I was born in Austin Texas in 1990. Now I am 14 years old and freshmen in Jasper high school. I am living under the shadow of my artistic mother. I get my talent in art from my parents; it’s in my blood. My mom is an artist and my dad used to be one of the top graphic designers in Sri Lanka. I have won many awards from two years old; now I am one of the best artists in my school. When I paint I like to reflect on history, imagination, and feeling. I have always been captivated by history, mainly Greek, roman, and renaissance.

Also I have a really wild imagination I think it comes with the talent, like a package deal. I still play make believe with my little brothers friends, make tents for them to play in, I am still an immature kid.

When I paint I want my painting to express feeling, I want the viewer to feel it when they look at it. In a painting there might be different emotions but they all tie up to make my painting complete. Whenever I plan on painting I need to be motivated a lot and have inspiration. For my paintings I look back in to my archival brain and pick out what I want to put into my painting, it’s sort of like a recipe with different ingredients. But in this recipe you get to choose your ingredients. If I don’t like the outcome I go back and pick and switch out items.

I love to sculpt; when it snows I have a ball, making snow sculptures. I work with clay, printmaking, papier-mâché, paper sculpture any thing that I can get my hands on to create, some times it can be even left over food on my plate.

You can say I am a confused artist, but the truth is I am who I am…
